Suspected ISWAP fighters carried out a violent attack on a police formation in Geidam, Yobe State, killing one police officer.
Witnesses said the attackers burned two patrol vehicles and went away with one during the 45-minute assault.
A security source said the gunmen arrived around 1:30am on Wednesday and opened fire randomly.
“In the silent hours of the night, they killed one police officer, broke into holding rooms, burned two patrol vehicles, and took one away,” the source said.
Intelligence reports also indicate that ISWAP fighters are gathering in parts of Yunusari local government.
“Reliable reports say they are regrouping in Sukdu, Buhari, Mattati and Bulabulin,” the source added.
Yobe Police spokesperson, SP Dungus Abdulkarim, confirmed the attack, saying the terrorists may have targeted the area to seize vehicles.
“Investigations are ongoing,” he said.
Rising attacks across Nigeria
Terror-related violence has intensified across the country, leading President Bola Tinubu to cancel some foreign trips. Last week, terrorists killed soldiers, CJTF members and a Brigadier-General.
On Monday, gunmen attacked GGCSS school in Maga, Danko Wasagu, Kebbi State, killing one officer and abducting 25 students.
Two days later, attackers stormed a church in Kwara, killing worshippers and kidnapping 30 people.
In response, Minister of Information Mohammed Idris said President Tinubu has placed the national security system on “the highest emergency alert level.”
He made the statement on Wednesday in Abuja during a press briefing on the rising wave of terrorist attacks.
