The Department of State Services (DSS) has confirmed the arrest of two former personnel who were dismissed from the agency but continued to use its name to defraud unsuspecting members of the public.
In a statement posted on its official X on Wednesday, the DSS identified the individuals as Barry Donald and Victor Onyedikachi Godwin, adding that both men had been parading themselves as serving operatives.
The Service said the two ex-officers had been engaging in fraudulent activities under the guise of DSS personnel, thereby tarnishing the image of the organization and deceiving innocent citizens.
DSS vows to prosecute suspects
The agency disclosed that the suspects had been apprehended and would face prosecution in accordance with Nigerian law.
It also warned the public to be cautious and avoid dealing with anyone claiming to be a DSS officer without proper verification, stressing that it would not tolerate any misuse of its name or authority.
According to the DSS, the arrests were part of its ongoing effort to rid the public space of impostors and ensure that dismissed officers do not exploit their previous association with the Service.
DSS to publish names of other dismissed officers
In a move to further protect citizens, the DSS announced plans to publish the names of other personnel who had been dismissed in the past.
The agency said the decision was aimed at preventing the public from falling victim to potential scams or criminal acts committed by former officers pretending to still be in service.
Members of the public were advised to direct any requests, enquiries, or complaints to the DSS through its official communication channels — phone number 09088373515 or email dsspr@dss.gov.ng
