Kano State governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf, has approved the disbursement of ₦5.6bn to 1,198 former councillors across the state as part of ongoing efforts to settle outstanding gratuities and allowances left unpaid by the previous administration.

The payment, announced at the Government House, represents the second tranche in a three-cycle plan aimed at clearing a total debt of ₦15.67bn

The first tranche of ₦1.8bn had earlier been paid to 903 councillors who served between 2014 and 2017.

Gov Abba: Service to Kano will never be forgotten

Addressing beneficiaries, Governor Yusuf described the latest phase as “a moment of justice, fairness and restoration of dignity” for those who had served loyally at the grassroots.

“We are not just paying money, we are affirming a principle—that service to Kano State will never be forgotten,” the governor said.

He noted that most beneficiaries had already begun receiving bank alerts while he was delivering his remarks, underscoring the government’s commitment to transparency and prompt action.

Yusuf explained that preparations are underway for the final tranche of ₦8.2 billion, which will cover payments to 1,371 councillors across the state.

Final payment set for November

According to him, the third and last cycle is expected to be concluded by the second week of November 2025, bringing the long-standing issue to an end.

The governor commended the Ministry for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, the Accountant General’s Office, bankers, and the leadership of the ex-councillors’ forum for facilitating the process.

He also urged beneficiaries to make prudent use of the funds in supporting their families and communities, stressing that the initiative represents more than just a financial settlement.

“This is justice, this is equity, and this is the spirit of our administration,” Yusuf declared.

He said the payments should be seen not only as entitlements but also as a renewed bond between the state government and its people, especially those who had given years of service at the grassroots level.
