In a significant milestone for institutional-community relations, Bayero University, Kano (BUK) has successfully resolved its long-standing land dispute with the Danzakara community, ending years of tension and opening the door for stronger collaboration with its surrounding neighbors.

The breakthrough agreement, which comes just days before the end of the five-year tenure of the university’s Vice-Chancellor, Professor Sagir Adamu Abbas, was made possible through the intervention of Kano State Governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf.

Speaking at his office while receiving the Kano State Council of Ulama, led by its Chairman, Sheikh Ibrahim Khalil, Prof. Abbas hailed the development as a “significant milestone in the university’s history.”

He praised the role of the state government, traditional leaders, and the affected communities in ensuring that the dispute was resolved amicably.

According to the Vice-Chancellor, the Ministry of Land has already completed the demarcation of boundaries, and the communities involved have agreed to relocate. This, he noted, will finally allow the university to fence its entire perimeter — a development long delayed due to the lingering conflict.

Prof. Abbas also disclosed that a new Certificate of Occupancy (CofO) covering the resolved areas will soon be issued to the university by the state government.

The peaceful resolution of the dispute is being hailed as a model of effective dialogue and conflict resolution between institutions and their host communities. Stakeholders see it as a win-win that will not only enhance campus security and development but also strengthen BUK’s ties with its neighboring communities.

The agreement signals a new chapter of cooperation, mutual respect, and institutional growth — and it caps Prof. Abbas’s leadership tenure with a legacy of peace-building and strategic engagement.
