President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved the formation of a high-powered Inter-Ministerial Committee to oversee the planning and coordination of a state funeral for former President Muhammadu Buhari, who passed away on Sunday, July 13, 2025.
According to a press release issued by the Federal Ministry of Information and National Orientation, the committee will be chaired by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Senator George Akume, CON.
Top ministers, security chiefs named on the committee
The committee comprises key cabinet members and top government officials drawn from strategic ministries and agencies.
Those appointed include the Honourable Ministers of Finance, Budget and Economic Planning, Defence, Information and National Orientation, Works, Interior, Federal Capital Territory, Housing and Urban Development, and the Minister of State for Health and Social Welfare.
Also included are the Minister of Art, Culture and Creative Economy, the National Security Adviser, the Special Adviser to the President on Policy and Coordination, and the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Political and Other Matters.
Others named are the Inspector General of Police, the Director-General of the Department of State Services (DSS), and the Chief of Defence Staff.
The Office of the Permanent Secretary, General Services Office (GSO), will serve as the Secretariat to the committee.
Condolence registers to be opened nationwide
As part of the national mourning, President Tinubu has directed all Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs) to open condolence registers at their entrances, allowing members of the public to pay their last respects to the late statesman.
Central condolence registers will also be opened for the diplomatic community and general public at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Bola Ahmed Tinubu International Conference Centre in Abuja.
