The Federal Government has officially confirmed the death of former President Muhammadu Buhari, GCFR, describing the news as a moment of profound national sorrow and reflection.

According to a statement issued on Monday, July 14, 2025, by the Honourable Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, the late president died in London on Sunday, July 13, 2025, after a period of illness.

“It is with profound sorrow and a deep sense of loss that the Federal Government of Nigeria received the news of the passing of His Excellency, President Muhammadu Buhari, GCFR,” the minister stated.

A legacy of discipline and service

The statement extolled Buhari as a patriot and gentleman soldier whose leadership left “an indelible mark” on the nation’s history—both as Military Head of State between 1984 and 1985 and later as a democratically elected President from 2015 to 2023.

“Known for his integrity, discipline, and resolute anti-corruption stance, President Buhari championed policies aimed at fostering national unity, social investment, improving infrastructure, and addressing security challenges,” the release said.

His election in 2015 was particularly significant, marking Nigeria’s first peaceful handover from an incumbent president to an opposition challenger.

Tinubu orders 7-day national mourning

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, has directed that Nigeria’s national flags be flown at half-mast for seven days—starting from July 13 to July 20, 2025—in honour of the late leader.

“On behalf of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, the Federal Government extends its deepest condolences to the family of the late former President, particularly his wife, Hajiya Aisha Buhari, and his children,” the statement noted.

In a show of state honour, Vice President Kashim Shettima and Chief of Staff to the President, Rt Hon Femi Gbajabiamila, have travelled to London to accompany Buhari’s body back to Nigeria for burial.

Nation urged to reflect on Buhari’s values
The government also called on citizens to use this period to reflect on the former president’s lifelong values.

“We call on all Nigerians to honour the memory of this great leader by reflecting on his values of discipline, integrity, and selfless service,” Minister Idris said.

The Federal Government prayed for the repose of his soul, asking Almighty Allah to grant the late president Aljannatul Firdaus.
