Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), Zaria, has been ranked among Nigeria’s leading public universities in the 2027 Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings, placing third among public institutions in the country.
The university ranked fourth overall among Nigerian universities, joining Bayero University, Landmark University and the University of Ilorin in the 1,001–1,200 global band.
ABU also placed fourth in Nigeria and 42nd in Africa in the 2026 UI GreenMetric World University Ranking, recording an overall score of 5,552.5 points. Globally, the university ranked 1,032nd among 2,016 institutions from 110 countries that participated in the ranking.
The two rankings assess different aspects of university performance, covering areas ranging from teaching and research to industry links, international outlook and environmental sustainability.
The THE World University Rankings assess universities through 17 performance indicators grouped into five broad areas: teaching, research environment, research quality, industry and international outlook. The 2027 edition includes 2,297 universities across 118 countries and territories.
In the Nigerian breakdown, ABU ranked third in the Teaching category and also recorded third place in Industry.
Its position in the Industry category takes into account indicators such as industry income and patents, with ABU ranking as the second-highest federal university on the measure.
In the overall Nigerian ranking, ABU was placed behind Covenant University, the University of Ibadan and the University of Lagos, all of which were ranked in the 801–1,000 global band.
The university’s position in the UI GreenMetric ranking offers a separate measure of its performance, with the ranking focusing on sustainability and environmental practices within university campuses.
The GreenMetric ranking assesses institutions according to their efforts in sustainable campus development, environmental management and related areas.
ABU recorded 1,300 points in Energy and Climate Change, 905 in Water, 800 in Transportation, 700 in Education, 685 in Setting and Infrastructure, 612.5 in Governance and Digitalisation, and 550 in Waste, giving the university a total score of 5,552.5 points.
Its fourth-place position among Nigerian universities places ABU within the group of institutions assessed in the sustainability-focused global ranking.
The two rankings measure different areas of university performance, making their results useful for examining separate aspects of institutional activity.
While THE considers areas such as teaching, research, industry engagement and international outlook, UI GreenMetric concentrates on sustainability, environmental management, infrastructure, transportation, waste, water, energy and climate action, as well as governance and digitalisation.
Taken together, the results provide separate indicators of ABU’s performance in academic activities, research, industry engagement and sustainability-related areas.
The rankings also offer benchmarks for the university in areas such as teaching and learning, research, industry partnerships, international collaboration and campus sustainability.
ABU’s latest results follow other appearances in international university rankings earlier in 2026. The university was ranked third in Nigeria in the QS World University Rankings 2027, fourth in Nigeria by the Centre for World University Rankings and third in Nigeria by the U.S. News Best Global Universities Ranking.
The latest rankings add to the range of international assessments in which the university has featured this year, providing further measures of its performance across different areas of higher education.
The results from THE and UI GreenMetric also show the different criteria used to assess universities internationally, with academic performance, research, industry engagement, internationalisation and sustainability forming part of the broader evaluation of institutions.
