Troops of Operation HADIN KAI have repelled coordinated terrorist attacks in parts of Adamawa and Borno states and neutralized scores of fighters during follow-up air operations, the military said.
The incidents occurred in the early hours of Friday, according to a statement issued by Sa Atokolo, lieutenant and acting media information officer of Joint Task Force (North East) Operation HADIN KAI.
In Adamawa State, terrorists attempted to overrun a patrol base at Sabon Gari in Madagali Local Government Area under Sector 4 of the operation.
Troops at the base engaged the attackers, with reinforcements from Gulak and the battalion quick reaction force, forcing the terrorists to retreat without casualties or loss of equipment.
The area was later cleared and scanned for improvised explosive devices and booby traps to ensure the safety of troops and civilians.
On the same day in Borno State, terrorists launched a multi-directional attack on Forward Operating Base Azir.
The attackers attempted to breach the defensive perimeter but were met with sustained firepower from troops, supported by the air component and other Nigerian Army aerial platforms.
After more than an hour of fighting, the terrorists were overpowered and withdrew from the area.
During the attack, rocket-propelled grenade fire damaged troop carrying vehicles and the CCTV control room, which were partially burnt.
Troops retained control of the base and recovered weapons and ammunition, including a 60mm mortar tube, mortar bombs, locally fabricated explosives, heavy machine gun rounds, and hundreds of rounds of 7.62mm NATO ammunition.
The military said intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance platforms tracked the fleeing terrorists after the attack.
Air strikes along identified withdrawal routes led to the neutralization of additional scores of terrorists, the statement said.
Exploitation of the area showed that the terrorists suffered heavy casualties and loss of equipment.
Operation HADIN KAI said its troops remain committed to denying terrorists freedom of action and securing the North East region as operations continue.
