Suspected bandits have shot dead a prominent Islamic scholar, Sheikh Yahaya Masussuka, and his associate in Dutsin-Ma Local Government Area of Katsina State.
The incident reportedly happened around 9 pm on Monday at the entrance to the cleric’s residence in Dutsin-Ma town, where the attackers allegedly opened fire on the two men. They were taken to Dutsin-Ma Hospital for urgent treatment but were subsequently pronounced dead.
The deaths have plunged the community into mourning, especially among the cleric’s followers and residents familiar with him.
As of the time of filing this report, the identities of the gunmen and the reasons for the attack remained unknown.
The Katsina State Police Command has confirmed the death of the Islamic scholar.
It was also learnt that Sheikh Masussuka was scheduled to host a religious gathering in Katsina State later this week.
The deceased cleric had previously attracted controversy over his religious teachings.
On November 18, 2025, the Katsina State Government announced that he would be required to defend his teachings before a committee of Islamic scholars.
However, there was no indication as of press time that the earlier controversy was connected to Monday night’s killing.
The police had not released additional information about the attack or disclosed any arrests as of press time.
