The League of Civil Society Organizations in Kano State has renewed its call on government authorities, security agencies, policymakers, and stakeholders to uphold press freedom and protect the rights of journalists across Nigeria.
The coalition stressed that the media plays a vital role in promoting transparency, accountability, and justice, describing journalists as the “watchdogs of society” and “voices of the voiceless.”
It warned that any attempt to suppress the press undermines openness in governance and weakens the credibility of Nigeria’s democracy.
Press freedom is a constitutional obligation
The group reminded leaders that the Nigerian Constitution guarantees freedom of expression and press freedom under Sections 39 and 22.
These provisions empower citizens to hold opinions, share information freely, and demand accountability from government institutions.
It also highlighted that Nigeria, as a signatory to international charters and human rights treaties, is legally and morally bound to defend these freedoms.
“Protecting press freedom is not optional; it is a constitutional duty,” the statement emphasized.
Free media strengthens democracy and unity
The coalition noted that protecting journalists is not only about safeguarding a profession but also about preserving the health of Nigeria’s democracy.
According to the group, when journalists can work without fear or intimidation, citizens are better informed, leaders are held accountable, and governance becomes more transparent and responsive.
This, it said, strengthens national unity, speeds up development, and builds public trust in democratic institutions.
A call to government, security agencies, and citizens
The organizations urged the government and security institutions to stop harassing journalists through arbitrary arrests or intimidation.
It further appealed to lawmakers and the judiciary to ensure that Nigeria’s legal frameworks continue to protect press freedom.
Civil society groups, professional associations, and ordinary citizens were also called upon to stand in solidarity with the media whenever these rights come under threat.
“Freedom of expression and press freedom are not privileges; they are the foundation of good governance,” the coalition declared.
It added that safeguarding these rights would ensure accountability, transparency, and justice for all Nigerians.
