In what seems like another setback for former APC National Chairman and ex-Kano State Governor, Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, one of the witnesses against journalist Ja’afar Ja’afar has reportedly withdrawn his earlier statement.
Ja’afar, publisher of Daily Nigerian, was behind the famous “Dollar video” that allegedly showed Ganduje receiving bundles of cash.
Findings by Justice Watch News revealed that Ganduje’s former Chief Press Secretary, Abba Anwar, who served between 2018 and 2023, has now backed out from his earlier position.
Anwar was considered one of Ganduje’s closest aides throughout his six years in office.
The reason for Anwar’s sudden change of mind was still unclear as of the time this report was filed.
The original statements had been made in 2022 at the office of the Inspector General of Police in Abuja.
Fresh weight for the Dollar video case
This withdrawal could breathe new life into the “Dollar video” scandal, making it more relevant in legal circles.
Back when the video first emerged, several witnesses, including Anwar, claimed Ja’afar’s publication was an attempt to damage Ganduje’s reputation.
Supporters of Ganduje at the time accused Ja’afar of being sponsored by political enemies jealous of the governor’s achievements in transforming Kano into what they described as an “emerging megacity.”
But Anwar’s retraction has now raised eyebrows, sparking speculation about the true motives behind the move.
Political undertones deepen crisis in Kano APC
A source familiar with the issue told reporters that the decision may be connected to rising political tensions in Kano APC.
Ganduje has struggled to hold the party together in the state, and the withdrawal could add more complications.
The retraction also highlights divisions within the APC, with Ganduje facing increasing criticism not just in Kano but also at the national level.
It is unclear whether the Presidency or senior APC figures were aware of the witness’s retraction before it became public.
All efforts to reach Anwar for comment were unsuccessful at the time of publishing nor did he make a formal statement against it.
Meanwhile, the development has added another layer of uncertainty to Ganduje’s long-running battle with the “Dollar video” scandal.
