As Christians prepare to celebrate Christmas, the First Lady of Borno State, Associate Professor Falmata Babagana Umara Zulum, has supported 600 Christian widows with cash and food items in Maiduguri.

The support was provided as part of activities marking the 2025 Christmas season and aimed at easing hardship among vulnerable women.

Speaking during the distribution on Thursday, the First Lady described Christmas as a period of compassion, reflection, and shared humanity.

She said the intervention was designed to promote dignity, unity, and peaceful coexistence across religious and ethnic lines.

Each beneficiary received ₦50,000 cash, a 25-kilogram bag of rice, a carton of spaghetti, and cooking oil.

Associate Professor Zulum noted that while the support may not solve all challenges, it represents solidarity and care for widows who continue to show resilience.

She commended the women for their strength and perseverance, describing them as sources of hope within their communities.

The First Lady stressed that the gesture reflects the commitment of the Borno State Government to inclusive social welfare, regardless of background or belief.

Also speaking, the Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Development, Hon. Zuwaira Gambo, praised the First Lady for what she described as compassionate and timely leadership.

She said the initiative demonstrates inclusive governance and brings relief to women and families during the festive season.

Hon. Gambo added that improved peace and stability in many parts of the state have allowed families to rebuild their lives.

She assured that the ministry will continue to work with the Office of the First Lady to support women, protect children, and strengthen families across Borno State.

Prayers were offered for peace, comfort, and renewed hope, as the beneficiaries were wished a Merry Christmas and a prosperous New Year.
