President Bola Tinubu on Monday met privately with six governors from the All Progressives Congress at the State House in Abuja.
The governors arrived at the President’s office around 4.00 pm.
The discussion lasted less than an hour, and none of the governors spoke to the press afterward.
Who attended the talks
Those at the meeting included Jigawa Governor Umar Namadi, Edo Governor Monday Okpebholo, Ekiti Governor Biodun Oyebanji, Kogi Governor Usman Ododo, Sokoto Governor Aliyu Sokoto and Kebbi Governor Nasir Idris.
The meeting happened as the country is battling new security problems, including recent kidnappings and releases of schoolchildren and worshippers in the North-West and North-Central.
Some of the states represented—Kebbi, Sokoto and Kogi—have recently faced bandit attacks and ransom-related kidnappings.
Rising security measures
On November 26, President Tinubu declared a nationwide security emergency, directing the military, police and intelligence agencies to recruit more personnel and deploy them quickly.
He also ordered security agencies to focus on protecting schools, farms and places of worship, while governors strengthen early-warning systems in their states.
The meeting also comes a week after a change in the Defence Minister and renewed engagement with foreign partners for counter-terrorism support.
After the meeting ended, the governors declined to speak with State House correspondents.
