The Borno State House of Assembly has approved an extension of tenure for newly elected local government chairmen and councillors from two years to three years.

The decision followed the passage of an amendment to the Local Government Administration Law during plenary in Maiduguri on Tuesday.

Under the new law, elected chairmen and councillors in the state’s 27 local government areas will now serve a three-year term instead of the previous two-year tenure.

Lawmakers said the extension is aimed at strengthening grassroots governance through continuity, stability, and improved service delivery.

They explained that the former two-year tenure was inadequate for local government officials to effectively plan, implement, and complete development projects.

The House noted that the three-year term will allow officials more time to execute people-oriented programs, enhance accountability, and deepen democratic practices at the local level.

The bill is expected to be transmitted to the executive for assent, after which it will take effect across the state.
