The University of Maiduguri has dismissed claims circulating on social media alleging that its students were arrested for collaborating with Boko Haram insurgents.
The university said the allegation emerged from a viral video that has been widely shared across social media platforms.
In a statement signed on Tuesday by Ahmad A. Lawan, registrar of the university, the university described the claims as false, baseless, and misleading.
The management stated that no student of the University of Maiduguri has been found to have links with Boko Haram or any similar group.
The university said it has never tolerated extremism or violence in any form.
It added that the institution has remained actively involved in efforts to counter violent extremism and promote peace and national security in the North East.
The statement said staff and students of the university are law-abiding and focused on academic pursuits.
The management urged parents, guardians, and members of the public to disregard the viral video and what it described as misinformation.
It also appealed to the public to refrain from spreading the video due to its negative impact.
The university reaffirmed its commitment to academic excellence, moral discipline, peace, security, and national unity.
