The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC)in Sokoto State has dismissed claims that the state government has yet to implement the new ₦70,000 minimum wage.
In a joint statement with the Nigeria Union of Local Government Employees (NULGE), the NLC described the report as “misleading and completely untrue.”
They specifically debunked a statement allegedly made by the National President of NULGE, Ali Haruna Kankara, who was reported to have listed Sokoto among states that have not adopted the new wage structure.
Setting the record straight, Sokoto State NLC Chairman, Aliyu Abdullahi Jangale, said:
“Sokoto State was actually the first in the federation to fully implement the ₦70,000 minimum wage, starting as far back as January this year.”
He noted that workers across all levels—state, local government, and LGEAs—are already benefitting from the new wage. Jangale expressed disappointment over the misinformation and urged national labour leaders to fact-check before making public comments.
“It’s disheartening to hear such a claim from our national president. We expected better,” he added.
Jangale went on to commend Governor Ahmed Aliyu for his commitment to workers’ welfare, describing him as “the most worker-friendly governor in Nigeria.” He cited several steps taken by the administration, including a cleanup of the payroll system for greater transparency.
“We participated in the verification committee that identified ghost workers. That process was crucial in preparing for the implementation of the new salary structure,” he explained.
He also highlighted the government’s efforts to clear outstanding gratuities and pensions worth billions of naira, restore cash allocations to MDAs, and ensure timely salary payments.
“Governor Ahmed Aliyu didn’t just follow President Tinubu’s directive—he led by example. We are proud of that,” Jangale said.
The union leaders reaffirmed their commitment to protecting workers’ rights and urged the media to verify information concerning the welfare of citizens before publication.
