Two serving councillors representing Gidan Gona and Tsibiri wards in Maradun Local Government Area of Zamfara State have been abducted by suspected armed bandits in Gusau, the state capital.
The victims, alongside one other person, were kidnapped on Wednesday evening in Tsauni community, shortly after Magrib prayers.
Eyewitnesses said the gunmen struck at about 6:50 p.m. while the councillors were relaxing in front of their residence.
Tsauni community, which has previously hosted persons displaced by bandit attacks from neighbouring villages, has now been thrown into fresh panic following the abduction.
Confirming the incident to TVC News via telephone, the spokesperson of the Zamfara State Police Command, DSP Yazid Abubakar, said security operatives had been deployed to the area.
He assured that efforts were ongoing to rescue the victims and arrest the perpetrators.
“The Command is on top of the situation. Tactical teams have been dispatched, and everything possible is being done to ensure the safe return of the abducted persons,” DSP Abubakar said.
He further appealed to residents to provide timely and useful information on the movements of suspected criminals to aid security operations.
As of the time of filing this report, the abductors had not made any contact with the families of the victims.
