WhatsApp will be discontinuing support for certain iPhone and Android devices starting in May 2025, as part of a regular update to ensure the app remains secure and functional.
The changes will affect older smartphones that do not meet the necessary operating system requirements.
Specifically, iPhones released in 2013 and 2014, including models like the iPhone 5s, iPhone 6, and iPhone 6 Plus, will no longer support WhatsApp.
In addition, Android devices that cannot update to version 5.0 (Lollipop) or later will also be impacted.
This includes models such as Samsung’s Galaxy S3, Galaxy Note 2, Galaxy Ace 3, Galaxy S4 Mini, and Motorola’s Moto G (1st Gen), Razr HD, Moto E 2014, as well as HTC’s One X, One X+, Desire 500, Desire 601, LG’s Optimus G, Nexus 4, G2 Mini, L90, and Sony’s Xperia Z, Xperia SP, Xperia T, and Xperia V.
Meta, the parent company of WhatsApp, explained that these changes are being made as part of routine updates to improve the app’s security and functionality, ensuring it remains compatible with newer devices.
As WhatsApp continues to serve nearly two billion users globally, including a significant number in Nigeria, the move is seen as necessary to maintain the app’s effectiveness and safety for users on more modern devices.
This update will require those with older phones to either upgrade their devices or lose access to WhatsApp after May 2025.
