The National Council of State (NCS) held a meeting at the Presidential Villa in Abuja, chaired by President Bola Tinubu.
This marked the second NCS gathering since Tinubu took office in May 2023, following the first session convened on August 12 last year.
Vice-President Kashim Shettima, Senate President Godswill Akpabio, and the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Honourable Tajudeen Abbas, were in attendance.
Former Head of State, Gen. Abdulsalami Abubakar (retd.), was physically present at the meeting, while others joined virtually.
The NCS, established under the 1999 Constitution, functions as an advisory council with responsibilities that include providing guidance to the President on governance and matters related to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
It is anticipated that the President could present his nominees for the position of INEC chairman during the session, which was conducted behind closed doors.
Members of the NCS include all former Presidents and Heads of State, past Chief Justices of Nigeria, the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), the Senate President, the Speaker of the House of Representatives, the 36 state governors, and the Attorney-General of the Federation.
Other pressing issues tabled at the meeting include national security threats such as banditry, kidnapping, and proposals for effective strategies to address them.
