President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has ordered the immediate rollout of free healthcare access for low-income retirees enrolled in the Contributory Pension Scheme (CPS) as part of broader social protection reforms.
The directive followed a detailed briefing from the Director General of the National Pension Commission (PenCom), Ms. Omolola Oloworaran, at the State House.
President insists on dignity, safety net for retirees
In a statement issued by Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Tinubu described the free healthcare programme as essential for ensuring dignity in retirement, especially for the most financially vulnerable.
He also directed the immediate implementation of long-overdue pension increases and the Minimum Pension Guarantee, to serve as a cushion for the poorest pensioners.
Police pension crisis gets presidential attention
President Tinubu further instructed the PenCom DG to urgently resolve the lingering police pension issue, noting that officers who have spent their lives serving and protecting Nigeria must retire with dignity and peace of mind.
“The welfare of our police retirees must be addressed with urgency,” the President reportedly said during the briefing.
Ms. Oloworaran also briefed the President on ongoing plans to safeguard pension fund assets against inflation and to introduce foreign currency pension contributions, allowing Nigerians in the diaspora to participate in the national pension system.
President Tinubu welcomed the proposals, describing them as “revolutionary steps” that align with his administration’s vision for inclusive growth and economic protection for ordinary Nigerians.
