Lawmakers representing the Kano South Senatorial District on Monday convened what they termed a “critical meeting” to discuss their political future, amid rising dissatisfaction with the leadership of Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf.
The gathering, convened by Senator Kawu Sumaila, had in attendance notable members of the House of Representatives, including Alhassan Doguwa, Kabiru Rurum, Abdulmumin Jibrin and Abdullahi Rogo.
The move comes just a day after Messrs Sumaila and Rurum allegedly shunned an invitation from Governor Yusuf to attend an expanded meeting with APC members of the State and National Assembly, further highlighting deepening divisions within the party structure in Kano State.
Sources with knowledge of the Monday meeting organised by the senator at his office in Abuja told DAILY NIGERIAN that the legislators held extensive talks about their political path, citing what they described as “political neglect” of the Kano South zone by the state government.
The lawmakers reportedly voiced worries over what they consider the sidelining of their region, accusing the governor and his close allies of making major decisions affecting Kano South without sufficient consultation.
“We are in touch with serving and former lawmakers, as well as former party leaders who were recently sidelined from our zone,” a source said.
“We are also consulting top businessmen, clerics and other stakeholders from Kano South to chart a new political course.”
Another source however disclosed that the dissatisfied lawmakers are expected to meet with Gov. Yusuf on Monday night to present their proposal.
Although it is still uncertain whether the unhappy lawmakers are weighing a defection to the African Democratic Congress, ADC, indications show they may take a firm position against their present party if their concerns remain unresolved.
