The Senate has announced plans to convene an emergency plenary session on Tuesday, February 10, 2026.

The disclosure was made on Sunday in a statement signed by the Clerk of the Senate, Emmanuel Odo, who said all senators have been invited to be present at the sitting.

“The President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio, has directed the reconvening of plenary for an emergency sitting on Tuesday, February 10th, 2026,” the statement read.

The session is scheduled to begin at 12 noon.

This development comes a few days after the Senate passed the Electoral Act (Amendment) Bill on February 4, but rejected Clause 60(3), which would have compelled presiding officers to electronically transmit election results from polling units directly to the Independent National Electoral Commission’s Result Viewing portal in real-time.

The rejected clause was intended to make the process compulsory.

The lawmakers instead substituted it with the existing discretionary “transfer” of results, which permits electronic transmission only after votes are counted and publicly declared at polling units.

Civil society organisations and opposition leaders have criticised the Senate’s decision, describing it as a setback for Nigeria’s democratic advancement.

Senate President Akpabio has, however, defended the chamber’s position, insisting during a public event that the Senate did not reject electronic transmission and pledging not to be intimidated.

Tuesday’s emergency sitting may see the Senate revisit the rejected amendment amid public outrage and possible legal actions from figures such as human rights lawyer Femi Falana, with potential implications for Nigeria’s democratic processes and the balance between incumbency protections and verifiable voting technology.
