The Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi II, has vowed that attempts to destabilize Kano from within or outside the state will be defeated, asserting that the city’s legacy of peace and dignity cannot be shaken.
Speaking during the Hawan Nassarawa Sallah homage at the Government House, Sanusi expressed confidence that the forces fueling crisis in Kano would ultimately fail.
Sanusi tackles police silence over palace guard’s murder
He reflected on recent tensions in the state, particularly the killing of one of his palace guards during the last Eid-el-Fitr celebrations.
The Emir expressed deep dissatisfaction with what he described as a lack of accountability by security agencies.
Though the police reportedly arrested a suspect, Sanusi lamented that no updates had been given.
“We all saw what happened. My entourage was attacked. A palace guard was murdered in cold blood. But instead of prosecuting those responsible, I was summoned for questioning. Where is the suspect? Has he been released? Is the case buried? The people of Kano deserve answers,” he said.
Responding to the controversial ban on the traditional Sallah Durbar by security authorities, the Emir said festivities would continue in new forms.
“If they stop us from riding horses, we will use cars. If they ban cars, we will walk. And if they try to silence us completely, we will still find a way to speak to the world—even from our homes,” he stated.
Security agencies had cited intelligence of possible disruptions by hoodlums as the reason for banning the Durbar procession. But Sanusi stressed that the spirit of celebration cannot be outlawed.
He called on Kano youths to reject manipulation by selfish political actors and instead commit to safeguarding peace in their communities.
The Emir also offered condolences to the families of the 22 young athletes who died in a tragic road crash returning from the National Sports Festival.
He further extended sympathy to traders affected by the recent fire at the Farm Centre GSM Market.
In his remarks, Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, who was represented by Deputy Governor Aminu Abdussalam, urged residents to remain vigilant, support peace, and prepare for the rainy season by clearing water channels to prevent floods.
