Cristiano Ronaldo’s remarkable international career with Portugal has come to an unexpected and emotional end, following a reported disagreement with head coach Jorge Jesus.

The 41-year-old forward announced his retirement from international football after representing his country for 23 years, bringing an extraordinary chapter in Portuguese football history to a close.

Ronaldo’s departure followed a disciplinary dispute after he reportedly left Portugal’s training camp without permission. The incident resulted in a 30-day suspension, which had already been served, and a €255 fine. Jesus also left him out of one match and indicated that he was unlikely to start the next, prompting the forward to return home.

His final appearance for Portugal came against Wales on 24 September. He leaves international football with an outstanding record of 146 goals in 234 appearances, making him the highest-scoring player in men’s international football.

Despite his extraordinary achievements, the circumstances surrounding hisss departure have left a bitter feeling among supporters who had hoped for a more celebratory farewell.

Ronaldo’s international journey began in 2003, when he was a young and ambitious talent. His early years were marked by disappointment, particularly Portugal’s shock defeat to Greece in the Euro 2004 final, where the teenage forward was visibly emotional after losing on home soil.

However, he gradually developed into the country’s most influential football figure, taking over the iconic number seven shirt from Luis Figo and eventually becoming captain.

His defining moment arrived in 2016, when Portugal defeated France to win their first-ever European Championship. Although Ronaldo was forced off through injury during the final, he continued encouraging his teammates from the sidelines as Portugal secured a historic victory.

He later guided the national team to another major achievement by winning the UEFA Nations League in 2019 and added a second Nations League title in 2025.

Beyond the trophies and individual records, Ronaldo transformed Portugal’s international identity, helping establish the country as a consistent contender in major competitions.

Under Roberto Martinez, he continued delivering impressive performances, scoring 28 goals in 37 apppearances, further demonstrating his enduring influence despite his advancing age.

The Portuguese Football Federation has announced plans for a special tribute to recognise his contribution to the national team.

Although his international career has ended on a controversial note, Ronaldo’s legacy remains undeniable. From a talented teenager to a record-breaking captain, he leaves behind an extraordinary history that has inspired generations of Portuguese footballers and supporters worldwide.

One thing remains certain: Portugal may have seen the last of Ronaldo in its national colours, but his influence on the country’s football history will never be forgotten.
