Rivers State Governor, Sir Siminalayi Fubara, has dismissed all Commissioners and other public officers from their positions.

Speaking at the Government House, Port Harcourt, during a valedictory session with his cabinet on Wednesday to mark Nigeria’s 65th Independence Anniversary, Fubara explained that the action was linked to the Supreme Court verdict that affected their appointments.

It could be recalled that in February 2025, the Supreme Court upheld the legitimacy of the House of Assembly faction loyal to Nyesom Wike, Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

Amid the political conflict between Fubara and Wike, the governor’s nominees were earlier screened by factional Speaker, Victor Oko-Jumbo.

However, the Assembly under Martins Amaewhule opposed the move, but Fubara pressed on.

Following the declaration of a State of Emergency, which suspended both the governor and lawmakers for six months, several meetings were held, reportedly reaching an agreement that a new set of commissioners should be constituted.

In a statement issued on Wednesday, Fubara’s spokesperson, Nelson Chukwudi, quoted the governor as appreciating his cabinet members for their service and contributions to the state’s progress over the past two years.

He said: “The Governor highlighted the significance of Nigeria’s Independence, and called on all Nigerians to work together with Mr President to build a peaceful, secure and prosperous country and a brighter future for all.

“The Governor also reiterated his commitment to serve the State with renewed vigor, while thanking all citizens for their support, and wished all Nigerians a happy Independence anniversary.

“Furthermore, the Governor has relieved all Commissioners and other public officers affected by the recent Supreme Court judgement of their appointments with immediate effect,” Chukwudi said.

At its first sitting after the end of emergency rule, the lawmakers had directed Fubara to submit a list of commissioner nominees.
