The Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) has announced that the suspended Port Harcourt-Aba train service will resume operations on Tuesday, September 9, 2025.
The suspension came after the train broke down at Imo River on Wednesday, September 3, 2025, around 4:22 p.m.
This was disclosed in a statement issued by the Eastern District Public Relations Officer, Dr. Onyedikachi S. Onovo.
According to the NRC, the train, which was en route from Aba to Port Harcourt, suddenly developed an unusual fault and ceased functioning. “Despite the best efforts of our engineers to revive the locomotive, the fault persisted. Consequently, an alternative engine, Loco 2306, was quickly deployed to rescue the stranded train.
“While some passengers chose to take alternative routes to their destinations, others were conveyed back safely.”
According to Onovo, the train was returned to Port Harcourt and is currently undergoing thorough repairs to ensure it is fit to resume service in line with our enhanced quality control.
Passengers impacted by the disruption have been directed to visit NRC stations in Port Harcourt or Aba with proof of payment to obtain either a refund or a replacement ticket.
“NRC management reiterates its commitment to transforming the Corporation under the Renewed Hope Agenda and our Rail revitalisation programme, ensuring safer, more reliable, and customer-friendly rail services across the country.”
Onovo apologized for the disruption, stating that the NRC deeply regrets the inconvenience caused to its valued passengers on that day.
