Kano – The Kano State chapter of the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) has dismissed speculations that its 2023 presidential candidate, Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, and other key members are planning to decamp to the All Progressives Congress (APC).
The state NNPP chairman, Hashimu Dungurawa, made this known while responding to widespread rumours of an imminent defection by Kwankwaso to the ruling APC.
APC seen as failed party, says Dungurawa
Dungurawa insisted that neither the party nor its leaders are considering a move to the APC, describing the party as one that has failed Nigerians.
“Definitely, we (NNPP) don’t have that interest, intention and we see them (APC party) as enemy of democracy. Look at where they led us to today in the country. They don’t know people are looking for situation to teach them a lesson, meaning the day of election. Everyday, their vote is diminishing. In 2015, they had almost 20 million votes. In 2019, they score 16 million votes while in 2023, it was 8 million votes,” Dungurawa said.
APC leader open to Kwankwaso’s defection – with conditions
Dungurawa’s comments come in reaction to a recent statement by the APC chairman in Kano State, Abdullahi Abbas, who described the potential defection of Kwankwaso as a “welcome development.” However, Abbas also noted that certain conditions would need to be met for such a move to take place.
Despite growing rumours, the NNPP leadership maintains it is firmly focused on strengthening its platform and presenting an alternative to what it calls the APC’s failed governance.
