The Kwara State Police Command has taken into custody one Adeola Badru, accused of swindling a businessman, Joseph Olugbenga, out of N300 million with a false promise of securing him a federal appointment.
Commissioner of Police, Adekimi Ojo, revealed the arrest while addressing journalists in Ilorin on Friday.
He explained that the suspect presented himself as an experienced politician with powerful connections and assured the victim that he could secure him a position in the South West Development Commission.
Relying on this assurance, Ojo said, the businessman gradually handed over a total of N300 million to the suspect in different installments, convinced that the promise of the appointment would be fulfilled.
“Subsequently, the suspect blocked all communication channels, preventing the complainant from reaching him.
“Upon receipt of the petition, operatives of the Criminal Investigation Department swung into action and traced the suspect to his hideout in Ibadan, Oyo State, where he was arrested.”
Ojo stated that during questioning, the suspect openly confessed to the offence. He added that investigators are still gathering more evidence, after which the case will be taken to court for prosecution.
The police further cautioned citizens to remain vigilant against individuals posing as political heavyweights, stressing that authentic government appointments are not tied to financial transactions.
