The Jigawa State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has declared it will present candidates for every elective office in the 2027 general elections, brushing aside rumours of potential defections within its fold.
The assurance follows rising political activity and claims that the party’s 2023 governorship candidate, Mustafa Lamido, could defect to the ruling All Progressives Congress ahead of the next election cycle.
State Chairman of the party, Prof. Babandi Gumel, made the declaration on Sunday while speaking at a joint meeting of the State Working Committee and Local Government Chairmen at the PDP Secretariat in Dutse.
“The party will field candidates in all the elective positions during the forthcoming 2027 general elections,” Gumel said.
He rejected suggestions that the party might collapse into another political platform, blaming the rumours on political rivals.
Gumel described the speculation as “the handiwork of political starters who have nothing to show in the area of provision of democratic dividends to the people in Jigawa State.”
He insisted that the PDP remains cohesive and determined to regain control of the state.
According to him, the party’s governance record under former Governor Sule Lamido remains unrivalled in Jigawa.
“PDP under the guidance, leadership and tutelage of Dr Sule Lamido is second to none to all parties in Jigawa when the issue of development of the state is being discussed,” he said.
The chairman also urged local government party leaders to step up the ongoing electronic registration of members across the state.
He tasked them to “work assiduously round the clock to ensure all members are registered” to enable participation in the party’s primaries.
Gumel further disclosed the formation of a 13-member committee to supervise the sale of nomination forms and screening of aspirants.
He directed interested aspirants to contact the committee at the party’s secretariat in Dutse.
The PDP, he added, is restructuring itself to compete effectively and secure victories at all levels in 2027, despite ongoing political speculation.
