Senate President Godswill Akpabio said Nigerians must take responsibility for restoring peace in Plateau State and other troubled areas.
He told an APC crowd in Plateau state that peace would not come from foreign intervention but from citizens themselves.
Representing President Bola Tinubu, Akpabio said the government remained committed to ending violence and stabilising affected communities.
“It is not outsiders who will come and give you peace. It is we, Nigerians, who must bring peace,” he said.
“We must learn to live together. Without peace, there can be no progress.”
He urged residents to prioritise unity and support efforts to rebuild areas hit by conflict.
Akpabio frowns at killings
Akpabio became emotional as he spoke about the recurring attacks in parts of Plateau.
“I cry whenever I hear that a human being, whether a child or an adult, has been killed,” he said, adding that the tragedies were painful for him and for President Tinubu.
He reminded the audience that the Plateau crisis did not start under the current administration, noting that many incidents referenced in foreign reports happened more than a decade ago.
“Some of the reports people quote today are from 2010. I was a governor then and witnessed similar tragedies,” he said.
Akpabio calls for support, cooperation
The Senate President acknowledged the heavy toll of the prolonged conflict, including loss of lives, displacement and destruction of property.
He said the federal government would intensify its efforts to restore stability and protect communities.
He urged residents to support Tinubu and the APC, saying continued cooperation would help drive development and improve security in the region.
