A six-storey building known as Afriland Tower, located on Broad Street in Marina, Lagos Island, caught fire on Tuesday.
The tower houses the United Bank for Africa (UBA) offices.
According to eyewitnesses, the fire reportedly started from the inverter room in the basement before spreading to other parts of the building.
Videos from the scene showed thick flames coming out of the building as some bank employees were forced to using ladders.
Fire service moves in to stop the blaze
Confirming the incident, the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service said it had mobilized firefighters to bring the situation under control.
Deputy Controller General, Ogabi Olajide, said:
“A fire outbreak is currently being battled at a six-storey building on Afriland Tower, Broad Street, Lagos Island. The call was received at 13:38 hours, and fire crews from Ebute Elefun Fire Station and Sari Iganmu Fire Station responded. Evacuation of occupants is in progress, while firefighting operations have doused the earlier panic prior to the arrival of first responders.’’
As of press time, the actual cause of the fire had not yet been identified.
