Delta State experienced a significant realignment today when Governor Sheriff Oborevwori, his deputy Monday Onyeme, and a cadre of cabinet commissioners officially left the Peoples Democratic Party to join the All Progressives Congress.

The defections took place at a high-profile ceremony in Asaba, where several prominent PDP stakeholders in the state also announced their move, marking what many observers describe as a seismic shift in Delta’s political landscape.

Governor Oborevwori’s decision to cross the aisle was accompanied by his predecessor, Dr. Ifeanyi Okowa—the former deputy presidential candidate to Atiku Abubakar in 2023—highlighting the depth of support for the transition.

Speaking to the assembled party faithful, Oborevwori declared, “Today marks a new chapter for Delta State,” while Okowa affirmed that the APC platform promises “a stronger vehicle” for fulfilling their development agenda.

With the APC already holding power at the federal level, today’s defections are expected to bolster the party’s prospects in Delta State ahead of the 2027 elections.

However, political analysts warn that integrating high-profile newcomers can trigger intense internal negotiations as the party seeks to accommodate its new members.

Further developments and detailed reactions from both parties are anticipated in the days ahead.
