Kano State Commissioner of Police, CP Ibrahim Adamu Bakori, has urged the state government to set up specialized courts to expedite the trial of arrested thugs, aiming to avoid long periods of detention before prosecution.
CP Bakori made the call during a meeting with traditional rulers, security agencies, and the Kano State Taskforce on Peace Restoration and Youth Rehabilitation.
The Commissioner revealed that in the past week alone, over 60 individuals linked to thuggery were arrested, along with the seizure of 18 locally made AK-47 rifles.
He addeed that, narcotics worth over N100 million, primarily tramadol, have been confiscated from drug dealers since his tenure began.
In total, the police have detained 150 suspects involved in violent crimes, thuggery, and drug trafficking, recovering various illicit substances, dangerous weapons, and stolen items in the process.
CP Bakori explained that the roots of thuggery and drug abuse are tied to socio-economic issues, lack of opportunities, and weak support structures.
He advocated for greater investments in education, vocational skills, and recreational programs to provide youth with more viable avenues for success and personal growth.
The Commissioner also stressed the vital role of traditional rulers in maintaining law and order within communities, urging them to work closely with Divisional Police Officers to identify and address security challenges.
“With the support and cooperation of the people, we can ensure that there will be ‘no more Daba in Kano’,” he said.
Deputy Governor Abdussalam Gwarzo, standing in for Governor Abba Yusuf, reassured those present of the state government’s unwavering commitment to preserving peace and security.
He emphasized the need for unity in tackling insecurity, acknowledging the dedication of both security forces and government officials.
Highlighting that security is a collective responsibility, the Deputy Governor called for enhanced collaboration between citizens, traditional leaders, and security agencies.
“We all play an essential role in fostering a peaceful society,” he concluded.
