The Borno State Police Command has recovered a large cache of ammunition hidden within Maiduguri, raising fresh concerns about the circulation of illegal arms in the state.
The recovery followed credible intelligence received on January 4, about suspicious items concealed in the Kumshe Jamba Mari area of Maiduguri.
Acting on the information at about 2:00 p.m., the Divisional Police Officer of Lamisula Division led a team of operatives to the location, where the hidden cache was discovered.
The Department of Explosive Ordnance Disposal was immediately deployed, and the area was cordoned off to prevent any security breach.
A total of 912 rounds of B32 API type ammunition, measuring 7.62 by 51 millimeters, were safely recovered from the scene.
Police said the recovery prevented the possible use of the ammunition for criminal or terrorist activities within the state.
The recovered ammunition has been secured, while investigations are ongoing to trace its source, intended use, and those responsible for concealing it.
ASP Nahum Kenneth Daso, police public relations officer for Borno State, issued the statement on Sunday, commending members of the public for providing timely and useful information that led to the operation.
The commissioner of police, CP Naziru Abdulmajid, reaffirmed the command’s commitment to intelligence-led policing and urged residents to continue reporting suspicious movements or activities in their communities.
Residents were advised to contact the police through emergency lines 08068075581 or 08023473293 for prompt response to security threats.
