Bauchi State Governor, Bala Mohammed, has confirmed that over 60 bandits were killed in the recent violent attack on Mansur Village, Alkaleri Local Government Area.

He said the fierce gun battle also claimed the lives of 21 people from the community — including 13 vigilantes and 10 civilians.

Describing the incident as a “serious security challenge,” the governor praised the bravery of the vigilantes and security forces who stood their ground against the heavily armed attackers.

“As they inflicted serious loss on us, over 60 of them died too in the fierce battle. So the loss is not only that our people have been killed. Our security forces also decimated over 60 of them. This shows the chivalry and courage of our people. Despite their superior firepower, we were able to contain them through these young and able-bodied vigilantes and security agencies,” Governor Mohammed stated during his visit to the affected area on Thursday.

Condolence and government support

The governor extended his condolences to the bereaved families and said both the state and federal governments are working together to prevent future attacks.

“We are here on behalf of the government to commiserate with this community, especially the communities of Alkaleri, Gwana, Duguri, Yelwan Duguri, and parts of Bauchi Local Government.”

“I want to convey to you the commiseration of the Federal Government, especially the Office of the National Security Adviser. We are going to get a lot of assistance to enable you to work with strength and encouragement,” he said.

Governor Mohammed announced ₦5 million compensation to each of the families of the 13 deceased vigilantes and ₦3 million to the families of the 10 civilians.

He also donated ₦20 million to support logistics for vigilante activities in the area.

New security measures and recruitment drive

In a bid to strengthen local security, the governor revealed that over 2,100 vigilantes will be recruited before the end of 2025.

The initiative will start with 300 to 500 recruits from the most affected areas. He added that the vigilantes would receive structured salaries and professional training to enhance discipline and reduce the risk of extrajudicial acts.

The governor also called on traditional rulers to help identify informants and collaborators within their communities.

Governor vows personal commitment

Bala Mohammed reiterated his resolve to protect Bauchi residents at all costs, even if it means personally joining the frontline.

“These people have come to the wrong place. We are ready to sacrifice our lives for our people to live. Definitely, we will do everything. If it comes to a point where I have to throw away this ‘Babanriga’ and join you, I will join you, In Sha Allah,” he declared.
