The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has issued the Federal Government a new 14-day deadline to resolve long-standing concerns affecting its members.

The union warned that it would commence industrial action if its demands remain unaddressed after the expiration of the ultimatum.

It stated that the notice, which takes effect from Sunday, September 28, 2025, will begin with a two-week warning strike before moving to a total and indefinite shutdown over government’s indifference to outstanding matters.

The decision was reached on Monday after the National Executive Council meeting held on Sunday at ASUU’s headquarters in the University of Abuja.

According to Daily Trust, ASUU President, Prof. Chris Piwuna, “disclosed this in a strike notice he personally endorsed, noting that the union was weary of government’s nonchalant attitude toward the education sector.”

Media reports indicate that the union’s demands cover renegotiation of the 2009 agreement, provision of adequate revitalisation funds for universities, payment of pending salary arrears, and a sustainable framework for funding, among others.

“At the National Executive Council meeting held at the University of Abuja on the 28th of September, 2025, the Union decried the neglect of the University system and the government’s consistent refusal to heed to its demands.

“Accordingly, ASUU has given the Federal Government of Nigeria an Ultimatum of fourteen (14) days within which to address these issues.

ASUU stated that if the Federal Government does not resolve the issues within the 14-day ultimatum, the union will begin with a two-week warning strike before escalating to a full and indefinite industrial action.
