A commercial bus carrying supporters of the All Progressives Congress (APC) was involved in an accident in Yakasawa village, Ringim Local Government Area of Jigawa State, leaving 18 people injured on Sunday.
The incident occurred about two kilometres from Ringim town, where a crowd had gathered to welcome Governor Umar Namadi for the 15th edition of a government–community engagement programme.
Eyewitnesses said the Volkswagen Golf car, with registration number FKJ 102 JB, was speeding when the driver tried to avoid a pothole, losing control and crashing into the crowd.
Officials of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) and the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) rushed the victims to the Ringim General Hospital. No deaths were recorded, though some victims sustained serious injuries.
NSCDC spokesperson ASC Badruddeen Tijjani said an investigation had begun into the incident and urged motorists to drive carefully, especially in areas with potholes.
