The All Farmers Association of Nigeria (AFAN), Kaduna State chapter, in collaboration with major agricultural stakeholders, is set to inaugurate a dry season sorghum farming programme aimed at strengthening food security and improving farmer livelihoods across the state.

Speaking to journalists in Zaria on Sunday, AFAN chairman, Nuhu Aminu, said the pilot phase would support 300 farmers, who will receive high-yielding sorghum varieties suitable for dry-season cultivation.

“This is only the beginning. More farmers will be brought on board in subsequent years,” Aminu said.

Aminu also disclosed that AFAN is working with the Wheat Farmers Association of Nigeria to assist beneficiaries of the federal government’s 2025 dry season farming intervention.

According to him, the intervention provides a full input package for one hectare, with farmers required to pay only 50% of the cost, while the federal government covers the remaining half.

The AFAN chairman raised concern over reports that some individuals are illegally collecting ₦9,000 from farmers under the guise of enrolment into the programme.

He emphasised that no fee is required from beneficiaries to access the intervention.

“This is extortion. Farmers are not meant to pay any enrollment fee. AFAN will take necessary punitive action against those involved,” he warned.
