President Bola Ahmed Tinubu

The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Abbas Tajudeen, has emerged as the key figure uniting the defunct Congress for Progressive Change (CPC) bloc within the All Progressives Congress (APC) to throw full support behind President Bola Ahmed Tinubu ahead of the 2027 elections.

Abbas, who first entered the House of Representatives in 2011 on the CPC platform, stressed that the group remains firmly aligned with Tinubu’s re-election bid.

He assured the president that their support would come without strings attached.

According to a statement by his media aide, Abdullahi Musa Krishi, Abbas gave this assurance during a meeting with President Tinubu and other former CPC stalwarts at the Presidential Villa on Tuesday.

“Today marks the first time that former members of CPC have gathered in such large numbers to show support and appreciation for our president,” Abbas said.

“On behalf of all CPC members, I assure you of our unconditional support. More than 90 per cent of those who played active roles in CPC are represented here,” he added.

The Speaker announced that the bloc would roll out structures under the banner of Former CPC Members for Asiwaju, extending down to states, local governments, wards, and polling units. He said this would ensure grassroots mobilization in favour of Tinubu’s second-term bid.

Honouring Buhari, reinforcing CPC legacy

Abbas also commended President Tinubu for the pivotal role he played in the political journey of the late former President Muhammadu Buhari, CPC’s founding leader.

He particularly praised the president for what he described as the “unprecedented honour” given to Buhari at the time of his passing.

The Speaker highlighted that the CPC’s legacy remains alive in Tinubu’s administration, pointing to the presence of three governors, several ministers, and lawmakers of CPC extraction currently occupying key positions in government.
