The Headquarters Joint Task Force (North East), Operation HADIN KAI (OPHK), has issued a warning over possible terrorist attacks by Boko Haram and ISWAP in densely populated areas across the North-East ahead of the upcoming Eid-El-Kabir celebrations.

The spokesman for the operation, Lt. Col. Sani Uba, disclosed this in a statement made available to journalists in Maiduguri on Monday.

“Credible intelligence available to the Command indicates the possibility of isolated attempts by remnant Boko Haram Terrorists (BHT) and Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) elements to exploit the festive period to carry out attacks against civilian targets using suicide bombers and IEDs, particularly in areas of high population concentration,” he said.

The theatre command consequently advised residents to observe Eid prayers and festivities close to their homes and known neighbourhoods where possible, avoid large public gatherings when practicable, and remain extremely cautious in crowded places including markets, motor parks, banking halls, and prayer grounds.

The command also urged members of the public to promptly report suspicious individuals, abandoned items, or strange movements to the nearest military checkpoint, police station, or civil-military liaison office; cooperate with security personnel during stop-and-search and patrol activities; and avoid unnecessary travels, especially at night or in places with minimal security presence.

The Theatre Command further appealed to residents not to circulate unverified reports or rumours capable of creating fear and panic among the public.

It also called on traditional rulers, religious leaders, media organisations, and community stakeholders to sensitise their communities and encourage the prompt sharing of credible security information before and during the festive period.

“Operation HADIN KAI reassures all residents of the North East that troops are on standby, fully prepared, and firmly in control,” the statement said.
