Kano, Nigeria – The Kano State Police Command has confirmed the death of a Divisional Police Officer (DPO) and one other individual following a violent incident in Rano Local Government Area on Sunday, May 25, 2025.
According to a statement issued by the Command, the unrest began after a motorcycle mechanic identified as Abdullahi Musa was arrested for reckless riding under the influence of suspected substances.
He was detained and later taken to Rano General Hospital after exhibiting signs of weakness. He died in the early hours of May 26 while receiving treatment.
In reaction, a group of hoodlums attacked the Rano Police Division, setting parts of the facility and vehicles ablaze.
Town vehicles were destroyed, and the DPO sustained serious injuries. He later died at Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital.
The police have arrested 27 suspects in connection with the violence, and normalcy has since been restored.
Commissioner of Police, CP Ibrahim Bakori, visited the scene and paid a condolence visit to the Emir of Rano, Ambassador Dr. Mohammed Isah Umar. He has ordered a thorough and transparent investigation into the events leading up to the tragedy.
The Command has appealed to residents to remain calm and avoid taking the law into their hands while investigations continue. It also reaffirmed its commitment to peace and order in the state.
