A nurse with the Gambo Sawaba General Hospital, Kofar Gayan, Zaria, has been killed by assailants who attempted to snatch her mobile phone while she was returning home from work.

The victim, Hadiza Musa, was the Deputy Head of the Maternity Unit at the hospital.

Confirming the incident, the deceased’s husband, Hamza Ibrahim Idris, who works in Abuja, said his wife was attacked on Saturday evening after visiting a salon and an Islamic chemist in the Filin Mallawa area of Tudun Wada, Zaria.

“She called to tell me she was going to make her hair and also visit an Islamic chemist. I transferred some money to her, and our last conversation was around 6 p.m. after she left the chemist. After that, I couldn’t reach her again,” Idris recounted.

He said he kept calling her phone until the following morning when he assumed the battery had run down.

According to him, further findings revealed that Hadiza had boarded a commercial motorcycle around 6:30 p.m. when she was attacked by hoodlums who attempted to snatch her mobile phone.

“There were signs that her hands were forced, indicating that someone tried to wrest the phone from her. She was also hit on the head, and from the bleeding, I believe that caused her death,” he added.

Nurse discovered by good samaritans

Idris narrated that the attackers dumped her by the roadside along Mallawa Eid Ground, Tudun Wada, after she slipped into coma.

A good Samaritan reportedly found her and rushed her to a nearby clinic before she was referred to Ahmadu Bello University Teaching Hospital (ABUTH), Shika, where doctors confirmed her dead.

He said his late wife died just three months after the death of her sister, whose three children she had adopted.

“She left behind three biological children and the three adopted ones,” he said in tears.

Hospital mourns dedicated staff

The Hospital Secretary, Abdulkadir Balele Wali, confirmed the tragic incident, describing Hadiza as a professional, hardworking, and dedicated health worker who devoted her life to saving others.

“Her death is a great loss to the entire hospital. She was an exemplary nurse who always went the extra mile for her patients,” he said.

Attempts to reach the Police Public Relations Officer of Kaduna State, Mansur Hassan, for comments were unsuccessful as of the time of filing this report.
