Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has warned that the growing hardship in Nigeria is like “sitting on a keg of gunpowder,” stressing that poverty must be urgently eradicated.
He made the remarks at Dele Momodu’s leadership lecture themed ‘How to end hunger and poverty in Africa’.
Obasanjo said that Nigeria has no excuse to remain in poverty, noting that China lifted over 700 million people out of poverty.
“We must not just talk about food; first, we must secure our people,” he said.
Education and leadership are key tools
According to Obasanjo, quality education and responsible leadership are essential in eliminating poverty.
“No child should be left uneducated. Leadership is the greatest ingredient in the fight against poverty,” he emphasized. He argued that until Africa tackles hunger and poverty, the continent will continue to be seen as unserious by the international community.
“Discipline, good governance, and integrity are the tools we need,” he stated.
Ooni, Adeleke back Obasanjo’s call
The Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Enitan Ogunwusi, praised Obasanjo’s stance and urged Nigerians to support local industries and embrace patriotism in everyday life.
Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke echoed similar sentiments and stressed the need for humility and divine consciousness in leadership.
