The Kano State Police Command has expressed concern over a rising wave of dangerous tricycle riding — locally known as “Keke Napep” or “Adaidaita Sahu” — by underaged individuals across the Kano metropolis.

According to the Command, this reckless activity caused 16 serious but preventable road accidents in August 2025, resulting in injuries and property damage.

Traffic light violations becoming a growing menace

The police also flagged what it described as a “disturbing trend” of motorists and tricycle riders openly disregarding traffic lights and other road regulations.

This behaviour, the Command noted, leads to avoidable traffic jams, disrupts free movement, and endangers human lives.

Parents, guardians face legal consequences

Kano’s Commissioner of Police, CP Ibrahim Adamu Bakori, warned that operating tricycles by underaged persons is strictly prohibited and dangerous.

“Parents and guardians are strongly advised to refrain from allowing their underaged children to operate tricycles, as such actions will attract severe penalties under the law for both the rider and the owner of the tricycles,” he stated.

Command vows strict enforcement
The police chief stressed that all road users must obey traffic lights and road rules or risk arrest and prosecution.

Enforcement teams have already been deployed across the state to ensure compliance and deal decisively with offenders.

CP Bakori thanked Kano residents for their cooperation in maintaining order and called on them to report incidents of underage tricycle riding, reckless driving, and other traffic violations to the nearest police station or via these numbers: 08032419754, 08123821575, and 09029292926.

“Let us work together to make Kano State a safer place for all,” the statement said.
