A Nigerian Army commander was tragically executed by ISWAP terrorists after successfully leading troops and Civilian Joint Task Force (CJTF) members out of an ambush along the Damboa–Biu axis in Borno State, despite a coordinated air-ground rescue.
The Brigade Commander, whose identity has not been disclosed, had earlier informed senior officials of his safety following the operation. However, terrorists reportedly intercepted intelligence revealing his location, allowing them to track him down, capture him, and execute him after interrogation.
The joint military operation saw Nigerian Air Force (NAF) aircraft quickly intervening to rescue ground troops who came under heavy fire from ISWAP insurgents.
The mission began when the ground troops, under the Brigadier General’s command, entered the area along a route rigged with explosives. After exchanging gunfire, the sudden surge in terrorist numbers forced a tactical retreat and a distress signal requesting air support.
NAF aircraft were swiftly redirected to provide close air support, dispersing insurgents and rescuing the commander, his troops, and CJTF members.
A defence intelligence source said the operation resulted in the death of dozens of terrorists, while military casualties were minimal.
