The Federal Government has secured N250 billion in funding to develop light rail projects in Kaduna and Kano States, the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Alhaji Mohammed Idris, announced on Monday in Abuja.

Speaking at the World Press Conference, Idris said the investment reflects President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s commitment to driving development at the sub-national levels.

“Contrary to the perception being pushed at some quarters, this administration has demonstrated uncommon commitment to balanced and inclusive development since assuming office. No zone is taking a back seat,” the minister said.

He explained that N150 billion has been secured for the Kano Light Rail Project, while Kaduna will receive N100 billion.

Boosting Subnational Growth

Idris added that the Federal Government is also pushing for stronger fiscal autonomy for local governments, describing them as “catalysts for growth and development.”

He noted that all state governments now enjoy increased allocations from the federation account compared to previous years.

According to him, the removal of fuel subsidy has expanded fiscal space for the states, enabling them to fund more projects while reducing dependence on debt.

“Thanks to the increased headroom from the oil subsidy removal, the sub-national governments are now able to do a lot more and with less debt,” he stated.
