Sheikh Uthman Yusuf Basha, widely recognized for his soulful Qur’anic recitation, has been appointed as the Chief Imam of Jami’u Uthman Bn Fodiyo Jumu’at Mosque. In an exclusive interview with Iconic Times, the cleric spoke about his background, leadership approach, and future plans for the mosque and Islamic education.

Speaking on what inspired his journey into Qur’anic studies, Sheikh Basha said:

“Pursuing a career in Qur’anic studies is driven by a deep commitment to understanding the central text of Islam, combining intellectual curiosity with spiritual devotion. Growing up in a Sufist environment, the Qur’an was always a big part of my life. My father was a great Hafiz, and I would often recite along with him. I began learning the Qur’an at a tender age and memorized the complete Quran at 16, which solidified my desire to make Qur’anic recitation a career.”

Reflecting on his previous experiences leading other mosques and how they will shape his new responsibility, the cleric expressed confidence in his leadership journey and the possibilities ahead. “My past experience has been incredible. We’ve initiated transformative programs and achieved desired outcomes, Alhamdu Lillah. Here, too, we’ll do our best to ensure things work out as planned. Time will tell.”

On the issue of financial sustainability for mosques, Sheikh Basha noted that many religious institutions are now adopting innovative approaches to remain self-reliant. He explained that attaching schools to mosques has become a practical way to strengthen financial independence and maintain operations.

“We’re seeing mosques attach schools to gain financial independence, which is a proud moment. At Jami’u Uthman Bn Fodiyo, we’re exploring diverse income sources to ensure financial stability. Our financial plan is in place, and attendees will soon feel the change.”

The newly appointed Chief Imam also revealed that he is already working on expanding Islamic learning opportunities for young Muslims through a new educational initiative.

“I’m working on a new Qur’anic school, aiming to groom youngsters in Qur’anic memorization and Islamic studies, equipping them for today’s world. It’s going to be exceptional.”
