Borno State has emerged as the overall best-performing state in the implementation of the Immunization Plus and Malaria Progress by Accelerating Coverage and Transforming Services (IMPACT) project.
IMPACT is a World Bank-supported, community-driven project designed to cut by half the mortality rate of children under five by 2030.
It aims to strengthen primary healthcare systems while delivering integrated immunization and malaria services to vulnerable populations.
In Borno, the project covers 235 primary and secondary healthcare facilities across the state.
Receiving the award at the Government House in Maiduguri on Sunday, Governor Babagana Umara Zulum commended the Ministry of Health for its dedication and results.
The governor reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to sustaining investment in the health sector to improve the well-being of the people.
“I would like to commend the health commissioner, the permanent secretary, the IMPACT project coordinator, and the rest of the team for their efforts in achieving this feat of becoming the best-performing state. On behalf of the government and people of the state, I extend our sincere gratitude,” Zulum said.
“Healthcare is one of the priorities of this administration. I assure you that more investments will be made in every aspect of the health sector to ensure a quality and affordable healthcare delivery system for the people,” he added.
Presenting the award, Commissioner for Health and Human Services, Prof. Baba Malum Gana, attributed the success to a coordinated implementation strategy, digital monitoring tools, and improved data quality.
He said that in the past year, more than two million doses of anti-malaria drugs, two million test kits, and 359,596 insecticide-treated nets were distributed across the state.
The commissioner noted that despite security challenges and the 2024 flood disaster, Borno achieved significant immunization coverage even in vulnerable and hard-to-reach communities.
