Africa’s richest man, Aliko Dangote, has officially retired as the Chairman of the Board of Directors of Dangote Cement Plc, one of Africa’s largest cement manufacturers.
The retirement took effect Friday, July 25, 2025, according to a company statement signed by spokesman Anthony Chiejina.
Dangote’s retirement marks a significant transition at the top of one of Nigeria’s most valuable companies and a key driver of the continent’s construction sector.
Emmanuel Ikazoboh named new board chairman
Following the announcement of Dangote’s exit, the company’s board confirmed the appointment of Emmanuel Ikazoboh, an independent non-executive director, as the new Chairman of the Board.
Ikazoboh is a seasoned corporate governance expert with decades of leadership experience across various sectors.
He previously served as Administrator of the Nigerian Stock Exchange (NSE) and has held top roles in multinational corporations, including within the Deloitte network in West and Central Africa.
A turning point in Dangote Group’s leadership structure
Aliko Dangote’s departure as board chairman comes as part of what industry analysts see as a gradual transition towards more independent corporate governance within the Dangote Group.
While he remains actively involved in other businesses under the conglomerate, his exit from the cement board signifies the opening of a new chapter for the firm.
Under his leadership, Dangote Cement expanded operations into several African countries and became a key contributor to Nigeria’s GDP, job creation, and regional infrastructure development.
Further details about Dangote’s future role within the broader Dangote Group or new ventures have not been disclosed at the time of this report.
