The University of Maiduguri (UNIMAID) will confer First Class honors upon 205 students during its upcoming 25th combined convocation, highlighting academic excellence as the institution marks its 50th anniversary.

Vice-Chancellor Professor Mohammed Laminu Mele announced the achievement during a press conference on Monday, noting that these top-performing students are among 20,164 graduates who will receive various degrees.

The graduating class represents one of the largest in the university’s history and includes 13,624 Bachelor’s degree recipients.

Beyond the 205 First Class honorees, 3,114 students earned Second Class Upper Division and 9,501 obtained Second Class Lower Division.

Professor Mele congratulated the graduates for their “hard work, resilience, and dedication to academic excellence,” particularly noting the significance of their achievement as the university celebrates five decades of operation.

The convocation ceremonies come as UNIMAID showcases major institutional advancements, including digital transformation initiatives, infrastructure upgrades, and expanded research capabilities.

The university has grown from two faculties in 1975 to 17 faculties today, plus specialized colleges and research centers.

The Vice-Chancellor emphasized that the academic achievements reflect the university’s commitment to maintaining high standards despite challenges, including security concerns in the region.

He described the Golden Jubilee as “a profound reminder of the University’s resilience and growth.”

The university will also honor distinguished Nigerians and establish a new endowment fund to support future academic excellence during the anniversary celebrations.
